Walking in Andalucia and Catalonia with On Foot Holidays

On Foot Holidays offer self-guided walks to Andalucia and Catalonia in Spain, as well as many other routes across Europe from Portugal in the west to Turkey in the east. Discover parts of Spain rarely seen by other visitors; explore towns and villages and stay in small, very local B&Bs, pensions and farmhouses for a taste of local food and wine and a total immersion into the local culture. We provide detailed route notes and maps and transport your luggage, leaving you unencumbered and free to explore at your own pace.

Andalucia – The white villages of the Ronda mountains Through the Sierra de Grazalema to Ronda
A lovely walk in the still unspoilt mountains to the west of Ronda, culminating in two nights in the Moorish cliff-top bastion. Your stays in the fabled white villages, perched on the slopes for defence, are interspersed with glorious hillside walking through the dramatic limestone scenery of the Grazalema National Park. Ibex, eagles and griffon vultures are there for the spotting. Your walk will take you over wild mountainsides and along lush river valleys to Ronda, scene of some of the last battles of the Reconquista.

Highlights:

  • The rugged hills of the Grazalema National Park
  • White Villages with traditional little “Hostales”
  • Flower meadows and mountain pastures
  • Ibex, deer and griffon vultures
  • Approaching the Moorish citadel of Ronda

Catalonia – Quiet byways of the Garrotxa Beautiful Besalú and extinct volcanoes
This walk begins in the beautifully preserved medieval town of Besalú, where you stay in the comfort of a stylish hotel next to the old bridge. From here you walk through the heart of La Garrotxa Volcanic Zone Natural Park with its numerous (now extinct) volcanoes.

Winding up through the beech woods and rolling pastures of El Cabrerès, the cliff-girt plateau, the views are over the Catalonian hills, the towering heights of Mt. Puigsacalm and the (hopefully) snow-capped Pyrenees, before you move down finally for your stay in a converted farmhouse in the rural calm of La Vall d'en Bas.

You might consider a return to Besalú for a further night to explore in more detail its medieval alleys and Catalan restaurants.

Highlights:

  • Quiet byways of the Garrotxa Natural Park
  • Myriad orchids and butterflies in spring
  • Besalú, with cobbled streets and medieval bridge
  • Two nights in a stylishly converted farmhouse featured in ‘Vogue’
  • Extinct volcanoes and the wild cliffs of the Cabrerès
  • Walled town of Santa Pau and medieval castles
