Overview
The Laguna de El Portil Natural Reserve is home to a small freshwater lagoon surrounded by woodland. The reserve covers 13ha and is close to Punta Umbría. The reserve is noteworthy because of its population of chameleons.
Walking
Starting just before the resort of El Portil there is a footpath which takes you around the lake and to three bird hides.
Animals/Birds
The reserve is home to a wide variety of birdlife. These include grebes, kingfishers, spoonbills, plovers, grey herons and mallard ducks. Amphibians and reptiles found here include tortoises, frogs, toads, speckled newts and chameleons.
Plants
Reeds and bulrushes grow are predominant around the edges of the lagoon. The woodland surrounding the lagoon consists of stone pines, cork oaks, tamarisk and broom. |
